The UNGA in 1999 introduced a draft resolution calling for the designation the 25th of November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The realization that every 10 seconds an American is sexually assaulted and every 9 seconds in the US a woman is assaulted or beaten. These appalling statistics is not just an American issue, it is a serious mostly unnoticed by many epidemic that has spread its unquestionable claws around the world for so long.
It is past time to help and try to put an end for future generations of girls and women and all victims of violence.
Some may make the brash statement that “it has been around since the dawn of time what’s the big deal” That is one of the very statements as to reasoning behind the creation of this resolution. To bring to the forefront that the scale of this abhorrent violence is often hidden and is absolutely widespread in the darkness not just from the victims but also from the families and local governments.
This year is 2020 and as we have seen 2020 brings many challenges that also includes International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Many women and victims of abuse are under orders to “Stay Home” as we learned in March that is a dangerous and deadly order for victims and a blessing for the perpetrators.
2020 is also the year of widespread calls on social media for justice and change we must all rise and stand together for the voices that have become permanently silent to the voices that want to be free now but can’t be.
Right now someone you love could be a victim it is past time to help and try to put an end for future generations of girls and women and all victims of violence.
